Chad Adkins
Chad grew up in Toledo, OH, and graduated from the University of Toledo in December of 2020. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with a concentration in molecular, cell, and developmental biology, also minoring in Chemistry. Throughout his undergraduate career, Chad waited tables to support himself while balancing his courses. After graduation, he decided to take a break from the classroom to develop other skill sets. He gained extensive clinical experience working as a medical scribe and worked with providers in several specialties such as Rheumatology, Neurology, Oncology, Endocrinology, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Family Medicine, and many others. After scribing for over a year, he moved into a management position, helping pair pre-health students with providers to work with, offering support, and managing the schedules of the company’s medical scribes and providers. He later left this position to obtain more hands-on patient exposure, working in radiology at a local low-cost clinic. There, Chad worked mostly with oncology patients, helping to organize their radiologic care. He was simultaneously gaining further advocacy experience as a Crisis Text Line volunteer. He learned about the genetic counseling profession by shadowing and interviewing genetic counselors in his area, attending webinars and university information sessions, reading blogs, and watching videos online. In his free time, Chad enjoys trying new foods and restaurants in the metro Detroit area, traveling to Las Vegas, and spending time with his friends and family. He also enjoys the occasional spontaneous trip “up north” to visit his family or Traverse City for the weekend.
