As an undergraduate I worked in a metabolic research laboratory at the Lundquist Institute in Torrance, California. Studying the effects of intrauterine growth restriction on adult phenotype, I was amazed at the effects that epigenetic programming could have in one generation, a departure from the traditional mendelian genetics that was a focus of my undergraduate coursework. This peaked my early curiosity in genetics.
This fascination in genetics continued while working in cancer research labs at both UCLA Pathology and Georgetown prior to medical school, wherein the latter I looked at the role of different mutations in PI3K-Akt signaling combined with therapeutic treatment of prostate cancers.
Now after having completed two years of medical school in the Wayne MD-PhD program, I am gravitating towards a surgical field as a specialty. Having joined Dr. Klueh's laboratory looking at implantable device-tissue interactions, I know the MGG program will equip me with the tools that I need to thoroughly investigate the transcriptomics and proteomics of these interactions.
I am excited to be a part of the Molecular Genetics and Genomics program at the Center for Molecular Genetic and Genomics, and look forward to continuing to develop proficiency in the field!
