Celestina Agyemang-Dua, MS
- B.S. and M.S. in Medical Laboratory Sciences from Virginia Commonwealth University
- Currently a first-year student in the MGG PhD program
I received my bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science, where I trained and was certified as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS). During that time, I had the opportunity to shadow a cytogenetics laboratory and see first-hand the importance that genetics plays in health sciences. For my Masters, I conducted research that focused on the secretion of cytokines from THP-1 Monocytes when exposed to Naegleria fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba. This experience deepened my interest in research. My coursework in genetics and hands-on research work sparked a fascination in understanding genetic information and the study of life on the molecular level. I chose to pursue my PhD at CMMG because I knew that here, I would have the support, education, and research skills to excel as a Genetic Scientist. I am particularly drawn to exploring the genetic bases of human disease and in the development and potential for genetic interventions and targeted therapies.
Beyond my academic and research pursuits, I am also committed to fostering diversity and inclusion within the genetics scientific community. The study of genetics encompasses a wide range of complex and interconnected aspects, and it is through embracing diversity that we can unlock its full potential.
