A Closer Look at the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics

The Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics (CMMG) is dedicated to making discoveries that lead to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of human disease. From state-of-the-art research laboratories to the outstanding training environment for medical, graduate and postdoctoral students to internationally recognized patient clinics, the Center’s innovative, interdisciplinary program uniquely brings together, and bridges, molecular medicine and genetics research and patient care activities throughout the Wayne State University School of Medicine and affiliated medical centers.

World-Renowned Faculty

The foundation of CMMG is its internationally known team of more than 75 faculty members who are leaders in their fields and deeply committed to excellence. Most of the Center’s researchers and clinical investigators are also affiliated with other Wayne State University departments, centers or institutes. Their special focus on interdisciplinary research is breaking new ground through strong collaboration across the University’s campus, and around the globe.

Interdisciplinary Research

Today’s biomedical research increasingly requires an interdisciplinary approach. CMMG is taking a leading role in bringing together diverse teams of researchers and clinician-investigators. Center researchers pursue fundamental questions using a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and model systems.

Some of the Center’s areas of active research include transcriptional and translational control; cell cycle regulation; chromosome dynamics and transmission; development and differentiation; molecular genetics and cytogenetics; molecular mechanisms of mutagenesis; signal transduction; cancer and metastasis; viral disease, neurological and neuromuscular diseases; gene therapy; mitochondrial and cardiovascular diseases; and human reproductive biology.
