WSU/DMC Training Sites
The facilities at the Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University (DMC/WSU) are ideal for genetics training. DMC/WSU residency training programs are operated under the auspices of the Dean’s Council for Graduate Medical Education and a single DMC-wide program director. The DMC includes the following affiliated hospitals:
Children’s Hospital of Michigan (CHM): A freestanding hospital in Detroit dedicated exclusively to caring for children since its founding in 1886. The Division of Genetic and Metabolic Disorders (David Stockton, M.D. Division Chief) and the outpatient Genetics Clinic are located in the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Pediatric Specialty Clinic. In addition to the Pediatric Genetics Clinic, there are several specialty clinics within the Division. In 2004, CHM was awarded a contract from the Michigan Department of Community Health to provide newborn screening confirmatory diagnosis, management and treatment for all patients diagnosed with an inborn error of metabolism through the Newborn Screening Program. Within the Division there is a comprehensive metabolic management team, including two metabolic nurse practitioners, three metabolic dieticians, two metabolic nurses, a metabolic genetic counselor, a social worker and a psychologist, all supervised by board-certified clinical biochemical geneticists and clinical geneticists. We also have an active Enzyme Replacement Treatment Center. Additionally, we have subspecialty clincs, including a Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Clinic, a Cancer Genetics Clinic, a pre-symptomatic Huntington Disease Clinic and a Hemophilia Clinic. Included in the genetics professional staff at CHM are five full time board-certified clinical geneticists (including two who are also certified in Clinical Biochemical Genetics), two part-time clinical geneticists who are also certified in Clinical Biochemical Genetics and four genetic counselors. This is the primary genetics residency site for genetics and genomics training, including dysmorphology, inborn errors of metabolism, in-patient pediatric consults and pediatric neurogenetics.
Hutzel Hospital: A 244-bed tertiary care facility devoted to women’s care. Hutzel Hospital houses the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Therapy, which includes the Division of Reproductive Genetics. Hutzel Hospital is also the primary site for the Perinatalogy Research Branch (PRB), the only intramural National Institutes of Health branch located outside of Bethesda, MD. Included in the genetics professional staff at Hutzel Hospital are experienced maternal-fetal medicine specialists with interest in reproductive genetics and a board certified genetic counselor. This is the primary genetics residency site for reproductive genetics training.
Hutzel Professional Building: The Cytogenetics Laboratory is located in this facility and residents will report here during their cytogenetics rotation. The laboratory is directed by two board-certified cytogeneticists, Dr. Anwar Mohammed and Dr. Salah Ebrahim.
Kresge Campus: The Molecular and Biochemical Genetics Diagnostic Laboratories are units within the Division of Genetics Laboratories and Molecular Pathology within the Detroit Medical Center University Laboratories located in this building. The Medical Director of the Division, Dr. Gerald Feldman, is board-certified in molecular and biochemical genetics. Dr. Erin Wakeling, is a board certified technical director in the Molecular Genetics laboratory and Dr. Lidong Zhai is a board certified technical director in the Biochemical Genetics Diagnostic Laboratory.

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center (KCC): KCC is one of the nation's leading cancer research, treatment, and education centers located on the DMC campus. The Institute is a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Cancer Genetic Counseling Service (Michael Simon, M.D., M.P.H., Clinic Director) is located in the KCC. Included in the genetics professional staff at KCC are a board-certified oncologist and three board-certified/eligible genetic counselors. This is the primary genetics residency site for cancer genetics training.
Henry Ford Health System (HFHS): is located within 15 minutes of the Detroit Medical Center. The genetics clinic provides reproductive genetics as well as cancer genetic counseliing. The training experience is supervised by Dr. Jacquelyn Roberson and Dr. Mary Helen Quiqq, both board-certified clinical geneticists.
The Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics (CMMG): is the unit from which the Medical Genetics and Genomics Residency is administered. CMMG is located in the Gordon H. Scott Hall of Basic Medical Science, the major medical school education and research building. Scott Hall is located in the heart of the DMC, in close proximity to all teaching hospitals, laboratories and the Vera Shiffman Library.
