WSU/DMC Training Sites

The facilities at the Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University (DMC/WSU) are ideal for genetics training. DMC/WSU residency training programs are operated under the auspices of the Dean’s Council for Graduate Medical Education and a single DMC-wide program director. The DMC includes the following affiliated hospitals:

Children’s Hospital of Michigan (CHM): A freestanding hospital in Detroit dedicated exclusively to caring for children since its founding in 1886. The Division of Genetic, Genomic, and Metabolic Disorders (David Stockton, M.D. Division Chief) and the outpatient Genetics Clinic are located in the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Pediatric Specialty Clinic. In addition to the Pediatric Genetics Clinic, there are several specialty clinics within the Division. CHM is a designated newborn screening follow-up and management hospital for patients diagnosed with an inborn error of metabolism through the Newborn Screening Program. Within the Division, there is a comprehensive metabolic management team, including metabolic nurse practitioners, metabolic dieticians, metabolic nurses, a metabolic genetic counselor, a social worker, and a psychologist, all supervised by a board-certified clinical biochemical geneticist and clinical geneticists. We also have an active Enzyme Replacement Treatment Center. Additionally, we have subspecialty clinics, including a Pediatric Cancer Genetics Clinic and, a Cystic Fibrosis Clinic. Included in the genetics professional staff at CHM are two full-time board-certified clinical geneticists and one full-time clinical biochemical geneticist and five genetic counselors. This is the primary genetics residency site for genetics and genomics training, including dysmorphology, inborn errors of metabolism, in-patient pediatric consults, and pediatric neurogenetics.

Hutzel/Harper Hospital: A 244-bed tertiary care facility devoted to women’s care. Hutzel Hospital houses the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where genetics consultations may occur.  Harper Hospital houses the Neurogenetics Clinic.

Hutzel Professional Building: The Cytogenetics Laboratory is located in this facility and residents will report here during their cytogenetics rotation. The laboratory's interim technical director, Dr. Anwar Mohammed, is board-certified in cytogenetics.  Dr. David Carr, a board-certified molecular genetics pathologist is the medical director.

Kresge Campus: The Molecular and Biochemical Genetics Diagnostic Laboratories are units within the Division of Genetics Laboratories and Molecular Pathology within the Detroit Medical Center University Laboratories located in this building. The Medical Director of the Division, Dr. David Carr, is a board-certified molecular genetics pathologist.

In addition to DMC-affiliated hospitals, we utilize:

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center (KCC): KCC is one of the nation's leading cancer research, treatment, and education centers located on the DMC campus. The Institute is a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Cancer Genetic Counseling Service is located in the KCC on the Detroit Medical Center Campus. Included in the genetics professional staff at KCC are board-certified/eligible genetic counselors. This is one of the primary genetics residency sites for cancer genetics training.

Henry Ford Health System (HFHS): is located within 15 minutes of the Detroit Medical Center. The genetics clinic provides reproductive genetic counseling and is the sole location for reproductive genetics training.  The training experience is supervised by Dr. Jacquelyn Roberson a board-certified clinical geneticist.

Ascension St. John: is located within 20 minutes of the Detroit Medical Center.  Ascension St. John serves as an additional cancer genetics clinic and is supervised by Dr. Allison Jay, a board-certified clinical geneticist and medical biochemical geneticist.
