Application Process

There are several pathways for medical genetics and genomics residency training available at our institution and the application process for each of them is slightly different. Please determine which pathway is appropriate for your prior training and then carefully review the below instructions.

Eligibility/Requirements/Specific Application Process

Categorical (2-year) Medical Genetics and Genomics Residency

We are currently not accepting applications to this program.  See below for the combined Pediatrics-Medical Genetics and Genomics Program requirements.

Individuals applying to this program must have successfully graduated from an approved or recognized school of medicine or osteopathy.

Applicants must have satisfactorily completed at least two years in an ACGME-approved primary residency, such as Pediatrics, Family Practice, Internal Medicine or Obstetrics and Gynecology. One year previous ACGME-approved training may be acceptable, if the applicant has had other medical training in non-ACGME accredited programs.

Graduates from an approved or recognized medical school outside of the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico must present a valid ECFMG Certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) as an additional condition of eligibility.

All individuals with a doctoral degree earned outside of the US, Canada or Puerto Rico must have their international credentials reviewed by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) Credentials Committee for equivalency of their doctoral degree prior to entering medical genetics training in an ABMGG-accredited fellowship or ACGME-accredited medical genetics residency program. All graduates of our Medical Genetics Residency Programs will be expected to sit for the ABMGG board examinations, at the completion of their training. The eligibility criteria are available on the ABMGG website.

Apply through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) Fellowships beginning XXXXX.  ACGME Program #1302521047.  Please note: Medical Genetics and Genomics is listed as a fellowship even though it is a primary residency.

We participate in the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) for Medical Genetics and Genomics Residency. Match Day is XXXXX.

Combined Pediatrics-Medical Genetics and Genomics Residency

Individuals applying to this program must have successfully graduated from an approved or recognized School of Medicine or Osteopathy.

Individuals must pass Steps 1 and 2 of the USMLE or COMLEX Level 1 and 2, and apply, through ERAS, to the Combined Pediatrics-Medical Genetics and Genomics Residency Program at Children's Hospital of Michigan (Program #7652544012).

To apply to the combined program, one must meet eligibility requirements for both the Pediatric Residency Program and the Medical Genetics and Genomics Residency Program.

Submit your application materials through ERAS to the Combined Pediatric-Medical Genetics and Genomics Residency Program at Children's Hospital of Michigan ACGME Program #7652544012 [https://www.aamc.org/students/medstudents/eras/], beginning Sept. 6, 2023.

We participate in the NRMP Combined Pediatrics-Medical Genetics and Genomics Match. Match Day is March 15, 2024.

Combined Maternal Fetal Medicine-Medical Genetics and Genomics Training

We are currently not accepting applications to this program.

Individuals applying to this program must have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited OB/GYN residency program.

All individuals with a doctoral degree earned outside of the US, Canada or Puerto Rico must have their international credentials reviewed by the ABMGG Credentials Committee for equivalency of their doctoral degree prior to entering medical genetics training in an ABMGG-accredited fellowship or ACGME-accredited medical genetics and genomics residency program. To apply to the combined program, one must meet eligibility requirements for both the Maternal-Fetal Fellowship and the Medical Genetics and Genomics Residency Program.

All graduates of our combined MFM Fellowship-Medical Genetics and Genomics training program will be expected to sit for the Certification Examination in Clinical Genetics through the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics and for the Certification Examination in Maternal-Fetal Medicine through the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the completion of their training.

You must apply to the genetics side of training by sending a curriculum vitae and cover letter to Michelle Cichon at the below address or via email. Include in your cover letter that you are interested in the MFM-Medical Genetics and Genomics combined program. In addition, you must apply to the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program at Hutzel Hospital by contacting the administrative assistant, Julie Huff, jhuff@med.wayne.edu to receive an application. The Maternal-Fetal-Medicine Fellowship Program participates in the NRMP Maternal-Fetal-Medicine Fellowship Match.

Medical Biochemical Genetics Fellowship

We are currently not accepting applications to this program.

Each individual applying for this fellowship must be a physician and hold a currently valid, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States or Canada.

Each individual applying for certification must be certified or eligible for certification by the ABMGG in the primary specialty of Clinical Genetics, or be certified by an appropriate ABMS member board in a primary specialty.

For diplomates of another ABMS member board, additional training in the areas of genetics is required.

All graduates of our Medical Biochemical Genetics Fellowship will be expected to sit for the Certification Examination in Medical Biochemical Genetics through the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics, at the completion of their training. The eligibility criteria are available on the ABMGG website.

You must apply to the Medical Biochemical Genetics Fellowship by sending a curriculum vitae and personal statement to Michelle Cichon at mcichon@med.wayne.edu. Applications are accepted from July 1, 2022  through April 1, 2023.  For a start date of July 1, 2023.  Positions may be filled at anytime throughout July-April, so apply early!
