My initial attraction to the program here in the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics was twofold: I was really interested in evolutionary studies, and was also living here in the city. My preliminary interest in evolutionary studies correlates to my current research concentration, which is the evolution of gene regulation, and how such regulation is coordinated within a molecular pathway. Using energy metabolism as a model pathway, promoter evolution may account for differential expression profiles found within different tissues, relative to the employment of aerobic versus anaerobic respiration. Using evolutionary strategies, I hope to better understand the promoter elements responsible for these profiles, and the mechanisms employed to coordinate differential pathway profiles. My long-term goals include continued study of the evolution of gene regulation and expression profiles.
