Pediatrics and Medical Genetics Residency
The Detroit Medical Center (DMC) and Wayne State University (WSU) offer an approved combined Pediatrics and Medical Genetics 4-year residency program. This integrated approach allows the resident eligibility to sit for the board-certifying examination in both Pediatrics and Clinical Genetics at the completion of his/her training. The combined program permits the resident to complete both residencies in 4 years, which is one less than if the resident did separate residency programs. This is a change from the previous 5 year combined program requirement. It also allows the trainee to utilize their pediatric and genetics training in an immediate integrated fashion.

an area undergoing a remarkable urban renaissance. It has
a well-established Pediatric residency program.
Residents will experience Pediatric rotations with both categorical
residents and combined residents. A

During their medical genetics training, residents will receive training in other areas of medical genetics as required by the ACGME. Their rotations will take place in other on-campus DMC hospitals, all only minutes away and connected by an underground tunnel system. Rotations in cancer genetics, neurogenetics, prenatal genetics, laboratory genetics, metabolic genetics, and pediatric genetics will provide the trainee opportunities to receive the required genetics and genomics education.

In addition to the individualized teaching one receives in his/her genetics rotations, didactic learning opportunities abound, including the Medical Genetics trainee Journal Club, graduate level courses in Advanced Medical Genetics and Human Genetics, and weekly Medical Genetics Grand Rounds. Residents also serve as group leaders for the Year 1 Wayne State University Medical School’s Medical Genetics course, providing them with an opportunity to develop their teaching skills.
Residents also have the opportunity to perform clinical or basic research, having six months of research/electives available with both clinical and basic science faculty. Please go to the Admissions page for information about applying to our program.
